Actor and voice-over star Stephen Moore, who was the voice of the paranoid android in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has died aged 81.

The English actor had been on our screens since the 1970s and was best known for playing Kevin the teenager's father alongside Harry Enfield in 1997.

The London-born actoralso played Silurian Eldane in Doctor Who and has been described by friends and family as a 'lovely man'.

His death was confirmed yesterday by producer Dirk Maggs who took to Twitter to pay tribute.

He wrote: ‘Our dear friend Stephen Moore has died. ‘A fine actor, a lovely man and the original and most iconic voice of Marvin The Paranoid Android.

‘Our thoughts are with his family and our memories of him will always make us smile.’

Moore was born in Brixton in 1937 and first voiced the 'manically depressed' robot Marvin in 1978 during the second episode of the radio series and TV spin-off.

As well as this he also playedGag Halfrunt, The Ruler of the Universe, the whale and Frankie Mouse.

After a varied career, he retired in 2018.

It was Moore's adaptation of the character in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy which inspired the 1997 hit by Radiohead 'the Paranoid Android'.

Moore had been married four times and was a father to former Eastenders actress Robyn Moore.

Tributes have been flooding in for the actor and many have been praising the roles he played during his career.

One Twitter actor, Christian Patterson said: 'Incredibly sad to hear that the wonderful Stephen Moore has died. I shared a stage & many laughs with him when we both appeared in Oliver! He was a generous and wickedly funny man and a great talent and I’m sure he’ll be missed by all who knew him x.'

Actors and writes alike took to social media this weekend to pay tribute to Moore

This is while write David Eldridge said: 'Wonderful actor and lovely man who I was privileged to work with when Festen transferred in to the west end. God where do all the years go, three of that company are no longer with us. Anyway, rest in peace Stephen.'

West End perfomer Cat Simmons posted a picture of the two together and said he was a 'sweet sweet man' and that it was 'amazing' to have seen him on stage.

Writer Mike Torr added: 'Stephen Moore was such a vital ingredient in my life, and I'm in tears at this news. RIP Marvin, and I hope you at least manage to see God's Last Message to His Creation on your way out.'
