Usopp has a history of lying frequently, being cowardly, and enjoying making up stories with friends and complete strangers since his introduction. Usopp created his alter identity, Sogeking, after he abandoned the crew during the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arcs. Later, he felt bad for leaving and told Sanji and Franky that he couldn't help them fight because he witnessed the others trying to save Robin. He quickly changed into a mask and cape and adopted the name "Sogeking".

He occasionally adopts a deeper voice during this facade, which might be considered the "real" Sogeking. Although Usopp and Nami inform Chopper that they are impostors when he and Sogeking rejoin, it is unclear from his use of the name "Sogeking" whether he is merely shocked that someone is posing as such him or truly believes it to be the genuine Sogeking.

Before timeskip, Usopp is a tall, skinny youngster with medium-length black curly hair who appears to be referencing Pinocchio with his long nose, big lips, and prominent nose (a wooden boy from a story of the same name who possessed a nose that would stretch after he lied).
